Evelyn Salt is a CIA agent and highly respected by all, including her boss, Ted Winter. Out of the blue, a Russian spy walks into their offices and offers a vital piece of information: the President of Russia will be assassinated during his forthcoming visit to New York City to attend the funeral of the recently deceased U.S. Vice President. The name of the assassin: Evelyn Salt. Concerned about the safety of her husband, who she cannot contact, she goes on the run. Winter refuses to accept that she is a mole or a double agent but her actions begin to raise doubts. Just who is Evelyn Salt and what is she planning?
Some people may tell you that &quot;Salt is a fun movie&quot;. I suppose it is if you can completely forget logic and most of your common sense for about 2 hours. People also might say, &quot;why does every movie have to be realistic, why can&#39;t movies just be good mindless fun&quot;? Well they can be, however it works a lot better when the film actually takes you into another world such as Edward Scissorhands or Pan&#39;s Labyrinth, or if the film doesn&#39;t take itself so seriously, such as The Rundown or Die Hard. It also helps when the story is more than just a jumping board for cheap stunts and corny plot twists. Salt does not take us anywhere beyond the same old Hollywood garbage dump filled with lazy dialogue, plot twists that you can see coming for miles, boring characters and very few redeeming qualities at all. <br/><br/>Salt is pure action fluff meant only to fill the theatre seats with naive kids, waiting to see their over hyped super star Angelina Jolie kick some ass. To anyone that actually still uses their brains, this is dreadfully boring stuff.<br/><br/>Some people hold to the theory that it&#39;s okay for Hollywood to make these total action fluff films with weakly written scripts. According to them, people need to relax and not take films so seriously. Well let me tell you this. If I was to be accepting of stupid films such as Salt, I would only be encouraging Hollywood to continue making films without any meaning, without any real feelings, and even without a tangible story at all. I&#39;m sorry, but for my entertainment dollar I expect more than an overwritten and under thought reversion of The Roadrunner cartoon. The Roadrunner kicks the crap out of Salt any day, and why, because it was simple fun. Fluff action should always be simple fun, rather than overtly dumb. Salt takes itself way too seriously for the predictable nothing that it truly amounts to in the end. Don&#39;t waste your time or money…<br/><br/>3/10
The action scenes are plentiful and breathless in Salt, but that does not make up for the ridiculous plot. This movie plays like a distaff version of the Bourne films, only far more convoluted. The title character is presented as a superwoman who can overcome any obstacle in her way, which may be empowering for females, but removes any suspense when she is in dangerous situations, as we begin to see that she cannot be stopped. By the end of the film, Jolie&#39;s character resembles the Terminator more than a human being. Jumping from one extended, over-the-top set piece to the next, the viewer is dragged along on a visually exciting roller-coaster ride filled with impossible loops and turns that is forgotten as soon as it is over. Occasionally thrilling, but more often had me shaking my head in disbelief. To add insult to injury, once again we have a film without a proper ending, leaving the door open for sequels. Hooray.

Fearing for the life of her arachnologist husband Michael Krause (<a href="/name/nm0225944/">August Diehl</a>), Salt asks her boss, Ted Winter (<a href="/name/nm0000630/">Liev Schreiber</a>), the only one who believes in her innocence, to protect him. When Mike can&#39;t be located, Salt goes on the run looking for him, while trying to prove her innocence. Unfortunately, her actions say otherwise, and the question is asked: Just who is Salt—CIA agent, Russian spy, or is she being set up? Salt is based on an original screenplay by American screenwriters Kurt Wimmer and Brian Helgeland.It draws on the history of Lee Harvey Oswald&#39;s assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. <a href="/title/tt1958011/">Salt</a> is on the books, and Angelina Jolie has agreed to reprise her role as Evelyn Salt, but no release date has been set. &quot;Evelyn Salt&quot; was born to Russian Olympic wrestler Sasha Fyodorovich Chenkov and chess grand master Anya Nurekyova in 1976 and supposedly died of a fever one month later. The Chenkov baby was actually raised by a spymaster who programmed her to become a Soviet sleeper agent infiltrating as an American spy. She was exchanged for the real Evelyn Salt when Evelyn&#39;s parents died in a car crash in Russia, and Evelyn&#39;s face was disfigured. What happened to the real Evelyn Salt is not revealed in the movie. Orlov claims to be FSB (Cyrillic: ФСБ), which stands for &quot;Federal&#39;naya Sluzhba Bezopasnosti&quot; (meaning &quot;Federal Security Service&quot;), the main domestic security agency of the Russian Federation, signed into law in 1995 by then-President Boris Yeltsin. Its main responsibilities are counter-intelligence, internal and border security, counter-terrorism, and surveillance. It serves a similar but broader function for the Russian people as the FBI does for the American people or MI-5 for the British. Because the spymaster, among others, wants to destroy America. They do not like the path that Russia has taken since lifting the Iron Curtain in 1991. They want Russia to regain the strength it held during the Cold War, and the first step to accomplishing that is to get rid of the current president of the Russian Federation, who calls the deceased American vice president &quot;his greatest friend in the West.&quot; To test Salt&#39;s allegiance to the Russians, he was killed in front of her. She acted well enough for them to believe she did not care about him and was accepted back. Just as Salt cancels the missile launch, Counter Intelligence officer Peabody (<a href="/name/nm0252230/">Chiwetel Ejiofor</a>) and several security agents break into the locked room and shoot at her, but her vest protects her from being harmed. Winters (aka Tarkovsky) orders the agents to see to the president, who was knocked out by Tarkovsky. As Salt is being escorted out of the bunker in handcuffs, she leaps at Tarkovsky, wraps her handcuffs around his neck, and jumps over the balcony to garotte him. Salt is led out to the helicopter waiting to fly her and Peabody to be questioned by the FBI. Once in the air, Peabody asks why she killed him, and Salt replies, &quot;Because somebody had to.&quot; She explains her side of the story to Peabody and tries to convince him that she actually saved the world. But there are many more KA-12 spies out there, she tells him. At first, Peabody doesn&#39;t believe her, but then he receives an urgent message telling him that Salt&#39;s fingerprints were found on the barge where Orlov was killed. &quot;They took everything from me,&quot; Salt says. &quot;I&#39;ll kill them.&quot; After a few moments of contemplation, Peabody replies, &quot;That&#39;s bull!&quot;, and slugs her. Then he unlocks her handcuffs and says, &quot;Go get them.&quot; As the helicopter flies over the Potomac River, Salt leaps out, landing in the icy water. Peabody orders the helicopter to circle back, but Salt is gone. Peabody smiles. In the final scene, Salt can be seen, cold and wet, running through the woods. Altogether three different versions are available of Salt. One has to differentiate between the well-known theatrical cut, the Extended Cut and the Director&#39;s Cut.
